PRESS RELEASE

Five Filipino Workers Repatriated to the Philippines in January 2010

The Philippine Embassy in Tehran repatriated five (5) Filipinos working as household service workers in Iran in January 2010.

Earlier, the Philippine Government had issued an advisory that the Iranian Government prohibits the hiring of foreign household service workers and that a  foreign  national  caught  working  illegally  in  the  country  will  be  fined   IR 300,000 or US$ 30.00 for each day of overstay. Despite that travel advisory, undocumented Filipinos in the said field of work continue to enter Iran and end up running away from their employers.

These Filipinos are usually deceived by their employers, promising them that these employers can secure working visas for them in Iran. They enter Iran from Dubai or other neighboring cities on tourist visas, then stay illegally after their visas expire. All Filipinos who have sought the help of the Embassy have complained about being unpaid or underpaid for their services and very poor working conditions.

The Embassy reiterates the advisory to concerned workers and hopes they pay heed to the advisory and refrain from coming to Iran to work illegally as household service workers. END
